The internet was a major breakthrough. It changed our lives in the way we communicate, work and live. But since then it's been a bit boring. Smartphones and tablets have just been extensions of the internet, because without it they would be pretty useless. So what kind of new technologies are in the works which promise a shift in our daily lives?
Driving - The Google Car is going to make everything safer
Cars that drive themselves? Fuck yes. I can't wait for this to happen. Google is actively working on a project which will automate car driving. And why not? We humans are sucky drivers. Let the bots take over and drive us. People hesitate to put their life in the mechanical hands of a machine but I can assure you we will get much les accidents and trafic jams. Of course, now and then a car will fail and kill someone. But how many lives have been taken away by human failure? Recently it was reported that the Google Car has driven 300.000 miles without an accident. Google: I think it's ready, stop testing and give us the car already!
Paying - Square ensures paying becomes easy
I hate money! Let me nuance that, I hate coins and bills. Physical currency is cumbersome and unnecessary, bring in Square. Square is a great for retailers as well as customers. Retailers can easily insert a square shaped device in a jack plug of their phone or tablet. Consumers just swipe their credit card, or even better pay by phone through an app! Other solutions to this problem are popping everywhere, such as paying with NFC (a technology available with newer smartphones). Oh and if you need a nice new wallet to just hold your cards check out Slim.
Gaming - Oculus Rift is making gaming awesome
Most people are waiting for the new generation of consoles. They will get better processor, faster graphic cards and more memory. But are these new consoles propelling us into a new gaming era? Not likely, everything will look better and more realistic but it won't change much in the way we game. For some paradigm shifting action I'm really hoping for the Oculus Rift to shake things up. Virtual Reality has been one of the promises of the new media and with every gaming innovation we are getting closer to total immersion . This virtual reality headset is already available to game developers and it won't be long before us gamers can try them on. Here is me praying it won't die a silent death like The Virtual Boy did.
Which one of these mentioned innovations are you looking forward to? Or do you have something better? Let me know in the comments!
